The Local Food Group had their most recent meeting, following the Trader's Co-op in the Mt. Shasta City Park, last Saturday.
Present were Wendy Crist, Leslie Ellorin, James Anthony, Kate Korbel & Michael Gilmore
• There was a general discussion about how the local food efforts and projects are growing and expanding, and that as things progress, nodes of connection will naturally form, creating a true net-working.
• Leslie made suggestions on planning for availability of perishable crops, i.e. corn, for the Egg Buyers Club. Essentially planning pre-sales, or as Leslie put it "Corn Futures." So, as corn, in Wendy's case, gets close to maturity, she will post a notice of availability and then collect list of buyers. Corn will be delivered so that it will be as fresh as possible.
• Leslie suggested we start a quarterly newsletter for capacity building. We were all in favor. We will try to publish the first NL around the autumn equinox. Deadline for submissions is September 15. Wendy will collate, edit and publish on line: this forum, Jeffoodnet, SSOG-2 & Canyon Organics. For more information on these forums e-mail Wendy: gilcrist7@att.net.
• Wendy shared the most recent information on the Dunsmuir property she has been working on. The owners have tentatively agreed to lease garden space to Wendy and her Husband starting next spring. The mayor of Dunsmuir has offered to subsidize their efforts monetarily. The garden plot they worked this year was so successful they want to expand. Anyone interested in working on the land is welcome. Call or e-mail Wendy: 235-4963.
No next meeting date was set.

Subject: Water Rights Ordinance taken off ballot - by: ttshasta

Hello Water Rights supporters,

In light of a very recent unfolding with the Ordinance, we are canceling the Volunteer Meeting that had been scheduled for this Sunday, August 15th. Here's the update . . .

Many of you may already have heard the shocking news: This Thursday (8/12), the County Elections Clerk removed Measure A from the ballot. There are two separate issues. The first is regarding the one sentence discrepancy (see below). The other is a new claim that we did not follow correct procedures in filing our various documents, and that we should have filed with the County Clerk rather than the City Clerk.

The truth is that we meticulously followed instructions we received from the County Clerk. The Mount Shasta City Clerk accepted everything we filed, and then the City Council approved the Ordinance for the November ballot with no mention by the City or the County of any process errors.

In her decision to remove Measure A, the County Clerk also referenced the issue of the one sentence that was different than the version we filed with the city, and the version that appeared on the petition. Yes, we have discovered that this was our error, which occurred when we unknowingly used a previous version of the Ordinance for the City filing, and then used the correct final version for the petition. We did not know this error had been made until the County Clerk brought it to our attention two weeks ago.

However, it is important to note that the City Council and the City Attorney agreed that the language difference did not change the meaning or intent of the Ordinance, nor would it have changed the Attorney's title or summary. The City voted unanimously to keep Measure A on the ballot. And now the County Elections Clerk has removed it from the ballot! It has been an interesting unfolding which has raised many questions.

It appears errors have been made during this complicated filing process on our part AND the County's and City's part. We were given incorrect information as to how to file a citizens' initiative. False accusations have been made that we deliberately changed the language when submitting the ordinance. In the face of these current obstacles, we continue to be committed to the heart of this rights-based Ordinance. We are confident that the Water Rights Ordinance is a solid document asserting local rights, despite the attempts to kill it.

We are currently exploring our options and will keep you informed as we decide what to do and how to move forward.

Thanks for your on-going support for this ground-breaking citizens' initiative. We will reschedule a Volunteer Gathering as soon as possible so that you can fully updated.

Sincerely,

The Mt. Shasta Community Rights Project
